FPIs pull out Rs 34,843 cr from equities in Oct; turn net buyers last week
Foreign portfolio investors (FPIs) pulled about Rs 34,843 crore out of Indian equities during October, extending a trend of outflows that began in September after strong buying in July‑August. By the end of the month the flow reversed, and FPIs turned net buyers, injecting roughly Rs 6,300 crore back into the market.
The swing matters because FPIs account for a sizable share of daily trading volume; large outflows can pressure stock prices and widen indices, while fresh inflows tend to support valuations and improve market depth. Domestic institutional investors also stepped in, providing a stabilising cushion amid the volatility.
Investors will be watching global risk factors – such as US monetary policy, commodity price movements and geopolitical developments – for clues on whether foreign sentiment will stay supportive or revert to outflows. Domestic earnings reports and any policy signals from the Reserve Bank of India could also shape the next phase of market direction.
