Earnings Peak as Crude and IT Drag Nifty Lower for Fifth Day

Strong profit growth met with institutional buying, but a surge in oil prices and an IT sector collapse kept the index in the red.

The market closed lower for the fifth straight session, creating a confusing picture: headline indices fell while institutional flows turned positive. News reports highlighted that India Inc just recorded its best quarter in nearly three years, with Nifty 50 profit growth hitting an 18% high. Yet, the Sensex dropped 281 points. The culprit was a specific mix of rising crude oil prices and a severe tech selloff, not a broad-based panic. Foreign investors, who have been consistent sellers recently, stepped in to buy, absorbing the pressure even as the IT sector faced a rout.

The Nifty 50 carries into the next session at 24287.65, weighed down by a clear sectoral divergence visible in the strip chart. While Energy held up, Telecommunication and Information Technology lagged significantly, with the latter seeing zero advances against ten declines. Overall breadth remained weak, with declines outnumbering advances across the board. However, the India VIX settled calmly at 11.32, suggesting that despite the five-day losing streak, there is no latent fear building up in the system.

Trading on Tuesday will be shaped by corporate actions rather than earnings, with only Annapurna Swadisht scheduled to report. Investors will focus on RVNL, Sun TV Network, and Mahanagar Gas, which all trade ex-dividend. Additionally, Kirloskar Pneumatic will see its shares split, which often attracts retail interest. With 18 total corporate actions on deck, liquidity in specific names could get choppy right at the open.

The bull case rests on the return of buyer confidence. After a period of selling, Foreign Institutional Investors turned net buyers to the tune of 508.12 crore rupees, joined by Domestic Institutional Investors who added 356.4 crore rupees. This 'buy the dip' behavior is supported by robust fundamentals—corporate profits just hit a 10-quarter high. With volatility suppressed and domestic liquidity intact, the market has the fuel to reverse this losing streak if the crude oil narrative eases.

The bear case is fueled by external commodities and sector-specific weakness. Brent Crude climbed to 88.54, a level that historically spooks Indian equities due to inflationary risks. Internally, the IT sector is a dead weight—every single Nifty IT stock declined today. Adding to the pressure, global cues from the last completed US session were negative, which could dampen sentiment if the trend continues when markets reopen abroad.

Watch the reaction in Sun TV and Mahanagar Gas as they begin trading ex-dividend at the open. More importantly, keep an eye on Brent Crude prices; if they hold above 88, the drag on the index is likely to persist. Finally, monitor whether FIIs extend their buying streak for a second day, as sustained foreign inflow is the only clear catalyst to break the current five-day decline.
