Kotak says FCNR to put further pressure on Q3 margins; repo repricing, deployment to help

Economic Times 1 hr ago·25 Oct 2026, 8:34 pm

Kotak Mahindra Bank reported that its net interest margin slipped to 4.31% in the second quarter of FY27, down from 4.53% a quarter earlier. The bank said that deposits in foreign currency non‑resident (FCNR) accounts and the loans linked to them shaved roughly 15 basis points off the margin.

The dip matters because the net interest margin is a key driver of the bank’s earnings; a lower margin can compress profit even if loan growth remains steady. FCNR deposits are generally more expensive than domestic funding, so a larger share of these funds can raise the cost of capital. Kotak expects the full impact of FCNR to be felt in the upcoming quarter, but it also plans to deploy the Rs 55,344 crore FCNR pool and reprice loans tied to the repo rate, which could offset some pressure.

Investors will be watching the Q3 results to see whether the deployment of the FCNR pool and the repo‑linked repricing succeed in stabilising margins. Any changes in RBI repo rates or in the bank’s funding mix will be additional signals to monitor.
