What is the Nifty 100?
The Nifty 100 is a diversified index of the 100 largest Indian companies listed on the NSE by full market capitalisation — effectively the Nifty 50 plus the Nifty Next 50. It is free-float market-capitalisation weighted and maintained by NSE Indices Limited. SEBI's market-cap classification defines the top 100 listed companies as 'large-cap', so the Nifty 100 is the practical definition of the Indian large-cap segment, and it captures a very large share of the total market value of NSE-listed equities.
How investors use the Nifty 100
The Nifty 100 is used as the definitive large-cap benchmark — broader than the Nifty 50 but still confined to the biggest, most stable companies. Large-cap and multi-cap fund managers benchmark against it, and passive investors use Nifty 100 index funds and ETFs for one-stop large-cap exposure that is more diversified than the top-heavy Nifty 50. It is also the selection universe from which the Nifty 50 and Next 50 are drawn.
- Use it as the official large-cap universe (SEBI top-100 definition).
- It is more diversified than the Nifty 50 but still all large-cap.
- The Nifty 50 heavyweights still carry most of the index weight.
- For passive large-cap exposure, compare Nifty 100 funds on cost.
- Constituents shift at the semi-annual review as company sizes change.
What to keep in mind
Because these indices are weighted by free-float market capitalisation, the largest few constituents carry a disproportionate share of the index — so the headline level can be driven by a handful of heavyweight names rather than the average stock. Membership is a size-and-liquidity outcome, not a quality rating or an endorsement: a company is included because it is large and heavily traded, not because it is a good investment. The index itself is a number, not something you can buy directly — you gain exposure through an index fund or ETF that tracks it, which carries its own tracking error and expense ratio.
Frequently asked
- What is the Nifty 100?
- It is the index of the 100 largest NSE-listed companies by market capitalisation — the Nifty 50 plus the Nifty Next 50 — and it defines the Indian large-cap segment.
- Is the Nifty 100 the same as large-cap?
- Broadly yes. SEBI classifies the top 100 listed companies by market cap as large-cap, so the Nifty 100 is the practical benchmark for India's large-cap universe.
- How is the Nifty 100 different from the Nifty 50?
- The Nifty 50 holds the 50 biggest companies; the Nifty 100 adds the next 50 (the Nifty Next 50), giving broader but still large-cap-only coverage.
